FAQ

Otto, answered

Everything London delivery riders ask about renting an Otto electric moped or e-bike — eligibility, insurance, deposits and more.

Eligibility, age & CBT

Eligibility, age & CBT

Everything you need to qualify to rent an Otto delivery bike in London.

Do I need a CBT to rent an Otto moped?
Yes — to ride an electric moped you need a UK provisional or full driving licence plus a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate. A CBT is a one-day course valid for two years. Our e-bikes (ETT Trayser 2.0 and Cycl Carr-E) need no licence and no CBT.
How old do I have to be?
You must be at least 17 to ride an L3e electric moped with a CBT. For the no-licence e-bikes the legal minimum is 14, but delivery platforms generally require riders to be 18 or over — check your platform’s own rules.
What documents do I need?
A valid UK provisional/full driving licence and CBT certificate for mopeds, a form of ID (passport or ID card), and proof you’re registered with a delivery platform if renting for delivery. We confirm everything by email or WhatsApp before you collect.
Is there a credit check?
No. Short Rental and Rent-to-Buy have no credit check and no upfront cash deposit.
Can I rent for personal use, not delivery?
Our insurance is structured around hire-and-reward delivery. For purely personal use, short rental or pre-owned purchase is usually the better fit — get in touch and we’ll find the right plan.

Insurance

Insurance

What’s covered, what isn’t, and how the included insurance works.

Is insurance included in the rental?
Yes — every Otto rental includes comprehensive hire-and-reward insurance, valid for delivery work across Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Stuart and Relay, from the moment you collect the bike. There’s nothing extra to arrange.
What does hire-and-reward insurance mean?
Hire-and-reward is the class of insurance legally required to carry goods (like food) for payment. Standard private bike insurance does not cover delivery work — Otto’s does, which is why you can start earning the day you collect.
Is theft and damage covered?
Third-party cover is included. Optional theft and damage cover is available on top for extra peace of mind. Every bike also has a GPS tracker, and theft claims are handled in-house.
What happens if I have an accident?
Contact the workshop as soon as it’s safe. We guide you through the claim, and in most cases provide a replacement bike from Hammersmith the same day so you keep earning.

Deposit & damages

Deposit & damages

No upfront cash deposit — here’s exactly how deposits and damages work.

Is there a deposit?
There’s no upfront cash deposit and no credit check. A £150 damage deposit is held against your payment card and released when you return the bike in the condition you collected it.
What counts as fair wear and tear?
Normal use — light scuffs, tyre and brake wear from regular riding — is expected and not charged. Damage charges only apply to avoidable damage beyond normal wear, assessed honestly by the workshop on return.
When is my deposit released?
The card hold is released after the bike is returned and checked, normally within a few working days, provided it’s in acceptable condition.
What if the bike is damaged in an accident?
If you have optional damage cover, you’re protected up to the policy terms. Without it, repair costs may be charged against the deposit or invoiced — we always show you the assessment first.
